Identity

Lake Garda's most intact medieval town

Lazise is the only municipality on Lake Garda to preserve intact its 14th-century Scaligeri walls, which encircle the historic village for almost a kilometre with original battlements and watchtowers.

The walls were built by the Scaligeri lords of Verona in 1375 and later reinforced by the Venetians in the 15th century. They enclose the castle, the harbour, the Romanesque church of San Nicolò and the streets of the historic centre in a space that time seems to have left largely untouched. Walking the perimeter of the walls is an experience very few Italian villages can still offer.

The Venetian Customs House (14th–15th century) is Lazise's most significant and most photographed monument: a customs building with arches opening directly onto the harbour water, used as the checkpoint for goods in transit on the lake between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan. With its arches reflected in the water at sunset, it is one of the iconic images of the Veronese Garda.

Just a few kilometres from the medieval walls lie Gardaland (5 km south-west, Italy's most visited theme park with ~3 million visitors per year) and CanevaWorld (2 km), home to Italy's largest water park with over 30 slides. This dual identity — historic medieval village and gateway to major theme parks — makes Lazise the perfect base for families who want to combine history, lake and entertainment.
