The most photographed medieval village on Lake Garda's eastern shore: the Scaligero Castle has been mirrored in the harbour since the 13th century, the Monte Baldo cable car climbs to 1,760 metres in rotating panoramic cabins, and Goethe — nearly arrested here as a spy while sketching the castle in 1786 — called it 'one of the most beautiful views that has ever struck my mind'. Windsurfing, paragliding, alpine hiking and a pedestrian historic centre: Malcesine has no off-season.
Malcesine sits on the Veronese shore of Lake Garda, in the northern section of the lake, sheltered to the east by the Monte Baldo massif. The village is accessible from Verona in about 1h 15 min via SS249, the scenic Gardesana Orientale road that follows the eastern lake shore.
There is no railway station in Malcesine. The nearest is Peschiera del Garda (55 km south) or Rovereto (45 km north, served by Eurostar and regional trains on the Brenner line). By bus: ATV line from Verona Porta Nuova reaches Malcesine centre in about 1h 40 min.

Malcesine is the most photogenic village on the northern Veronese shore — a place where medieval history, alpine scenery and water sports converge in a pedestrian historic centre that looks unchanged since the Middle Ages.
The Scaligero Castle was built in 1277 by the Scaligeri lords of Verona and dominates the small harbour from a rocky promontory. It now houses the civic museum, with rooms dedicated to natural history, an armoury and a watchtower with panoramic views across the lake. In 1786, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe stopped here on his Italian Journey and was nearly arrested as a spy while sketching the castle walls — he wrote about the incident in his Italian Journey with characteristic wry humour, calling the view 'one of the most beautiful that has ever struck my mind'.
The pedestrian historic centre is one of the most intact on the lake: Venetian-era palazzi, the 15th-century Capitano del Lago palace, narrow alleyways of local stone and the Romanesque church of Santo Stefano. Beyond the castle walls, the northern Garda winds — the Pelèr from the north and the Ora from the south — make the waters in front of Malcesine among the most consistent in Europe for windsurfing and sailing.
Monte Baldo — called the Hortus Europae, the Garden of Europe, by Renaissance botanists — rises directly behind the village. Its 2,218 m limestone ridge harbours over 1,700 plant species, more than 100 of them endemic, thanks to an exceptional microclimate produced by the proximity of the lake and the fully Alpine eastern slope. The cable car that connects the village to the summit is one of the most technologically advanced in the Alps.
Monte Baldo is the mountain of Lake Garda: a 2,218 m limestone massif separating the lake from the Adige Valley. Its unusual position — eastern slope tempered by the lake, western slope fully Alpine — creates a unique microclimate that has produced over 100 endemic plant species. Renaissance botanists named it the Hortus Europae, the Garden of Europe.
The cable car from Malcesine is the most spectacular way to reach the ridge. The second stage uses 360° rotating cabins, giving every passenger a complete panoramic view of the lake, the Alps and — on clear days — the Po Valley. At the top, the landscape opens onto hiking trails, ski slopes (in winter) and one of Europe's finest paragliding launch sites.
