Lake Garda is not full.
It is badly distributed.

A manifesto for redistributed tourism on Lake Garda.

ilGarda.live  ·  gardalytics

Every year nearly 28 million overnight stays pass through Lake Garda. The narrative is always the same: the lake is full, it must be contained. The data tell a different story.

A handful of towns concentrate over 40% of all the attention the world devotes to the lake. Summer weighs five and a half times more than winter. While Sirmione overflows in August, dozens of localities live half-empty, and from November to March the entire lake hibernates. Garda's problem has never been too many people. It has been people concentrated in the same handful of places, in the same few months.

That is why we say it: Garda is not full, it is badly distributed. And what is badly distributed can be redistributed.

Restricting access punishes the tourist and impoverishes the small comune that still has room to grow. Redistributing the flow does the opposite: it relieves those who suffocate and gives life to those who wait. We do not call for less tourism on Garda. We call for tourism in the right place, at the right time, with the right person.

The principles

1

Measure before opining

Every position we take is born from public, verifiable data. We do not work with impressions, slogans or interests of the moment. When the number contradicts what would be convenient, we publish the number.

2

Distribute, don't dam

We believe in redirecting the flow, not closing the doors. But redistributing is not scattering blindly. Every place has a carrying capacity, and respecting it is part of the mission. Filling a fragile village merely moves overtourism to a new address.

3

The right tourist, in the right place, at the right time

Quality over quantity, in space and in time. Garda's largest reserve of space is not in another town: it is in another month. Bringing those who can travel off-peak to travel off-peak is worth more than any wall.

4

Every comune on the map

The small operator far from the postcards deserves the same visibility as the star. We give voice and data to the localities that mass tourism ignores, because that is where the lake's next chapter lives.

5

Editorial independence

We serve the territory before serving any partner. The intelligence we produce is honest even when it is inconvenient. Without that independence there is no trust, and without trust no redistribution is possible.

What we promise

To the tourist

To arrive where it is worthwhile without facing the crowd. We show not only what to see, but when to see it, and what exists far beyond the obvious.

To the operator

To be found even off the usual axis. We bring demand to those who are ready to receive it and do not yet appear on the visitor's mental map.

To the territory

To relieve what is saturated by redistributing what already exists. No town on Garda needs another suffocated summer to prosper.

Note that these three promises are, in essence, one. Sending the right visitor to the underused business means, in the same gesture, taking weight off the crowded spot. The forgotten operator's gain and the saturated town's relief are not opposed: they are two sides of redistribution. That is how, on Garda, everyone can win. Not in the short term of one high season, but in the long term of a destination that does not destroy itself by consuming itself.

Overtourism corrodes the very asset that sustains the lake. Every suffocated summer today is a little less of Garda tomorrow. To distribute is to protect. It is to keep alive, for longer, what makes someone cross a continent to see this lake.

Raw data in. Intelligence out. And intelligence, here, has a purpose: that Garda may fit into all its days and all its towns.
