How to read the level
The level is given in centimetres above or below the hydrometric zero — the official reference at the Peschiera del Garda gauge. A positive value means the lake sits above the zero, a negative one below it.
Lake Garda's outflow is the river Mincio, regulated at the Salionze dam. So the level reflects not only rainfall and snowmelt but also deliberate management for irrigating the Po plain downstream.
Where the values come from
The official daily value comes from the Comunità del Garda: the morning reading at the Peschiera del Garda gauge, in centimetres above the hydrometric zero (64.027 m a.s.l.). The Comunità publishes only on working days and adds the weekend values on Monday.
For Saturdays, Sundays and days without publication we show a provisional estimate: the average of the morning readings at the Manerba del Garda gauge of ARPA Lombardia (open data, CC0), corrected by the typical difference between the two gauges. We recalculate that difference at every update, as the median of the last four weeks in which both values exist. If those data are missing, we use the Peschiera Navigarda gauge of ARPAV (open data, CC BY 4.0) in a similar way. In a test over 26 days (September and October 2026) the Manerba estimate was on average 0.25 cm off the official value, and never more than 1 cm.
Provisional values are labelled as such and replaced automatically as soon as the Comunità publishes the official value. During the day the page checks the source every two hours.

How it changes with the seasons
The level is usually lowest in late winter and rises in late spring with Alpine snowmelt. Through high summer the lake is gradually drawn down for irrigation. Dry years can keep it well below average.
Why it matters
The level shapes the width of the beaches, the usability of jetties and slipways, and the look of the lakefront promenades. For sailing, swimming and boat trips it's worth checking the current value — together with weather & wind and the live webcams.
