How to read the level
The level is given in centimetres above or below the hydrometric zero — the official reference at the Peschiera del Garda gauge. A positive value means the lake sits above the zero, a negative one below it.
Lake Garda's outflow is the river Mincio, regulated at the Salionze dam. So the level reflects not only rainfall and snowmelt but also deliberate management for irrigating the Po plain downstream.
How it changes with the seasons
The level is usually lowest in late winter and rises in late spring with Alpine snowmelt. Through high summer the lake is gradually drawn down for irrigation. Dry years can keep it well below average.
Why it matters
The level shapes the width of the beaches, the usability of jetties and slipways, and the look of the lakefront promenades. For sailing, swimming and boat trips it's worth checking the current value — together with weather & wind and the live webcams.
