This page explains where ilGarda.live data comes from, how we calculate the Garda Score and the limits of what we publish. If you find an error, write to info@ilgarda.live: corrections are listed on the Corrections page.

The Garda Score

The Garda Score is an estimated index from 0 to 100 showing how calm a comune is on a given day. On the site we show it as a calm score: the higher the number, the calmer the comune. It is not a head count: it is an estimate built by combining four components.

ComponentWeightSourceType
Structural pressure: how busy the comune is in itself40%Fixed value per comune, estimated by the editorial team from its tourist profileEstimate
Traffic: slowdown on roads near the centre25%TomTom Traffic Flow (current speed vs free-flow speed)Measured
Seasonality: month, day of the week, holidays and long weekends20%Calendar (Easter, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, Ferragosto…)Model
Weather: how inviting the weather is15%Open-Meteo (conditions, temperature, rain, wind)Forecast

Each component is on a 0–100 scale, where 100 means maximum pressure. Overall pressure is the weighted sum of the four; the score shown on the site is 100 − pressure.

Important limitation. The component with the largest weight, structural pressure, is currently an editorial estimate, not measured data: it stays the same every day and serves to tell a very busy comune (such as Sirmione) from a quieter one (such as Tignale). We will replace it with official tourist-presence data when it is available and comparable across all three provinces.

Updates

The calculation runs automatically three times a day: late morning, lunchtime and late afternoon. The day's traffic and weather are the average of the readings collected so far, so the value settles during the day. If the traffic service does not respond for a comune, we use the last valid reading of the day or, failing that, a neutral value (50).

The comuni

ilGarda.live currently follows 26 comuni: those facing the lake in the provinces of Brescia, Verona and Trento, plus a few nearby comuni closely tied to the lake (Arco, Lonato del Garda, Castelnuovo del Garda and Valeggio sul Mincio). The final criterion will be published here.
