Where Peschiera del Garda is located
Peschiera del Garda sits at the south-eastern corner of the lake, in the province of Verona, exactly where Lake Garda drains into the Mincio river. It is built on islands and canals, enclosed within a pentagonal fortress — a one-of-a-kind case on Lake Garda.
Its position makes it the lake's main gateway: the railway station is on the Milan–Venice line, the A4 motorway exit is minutes away, and the Lake Garda ferries depart from here. Verona is 25 km away, Gardaland 3 km, and Sirmione 10 km across the gulf.

Why Peschiera is different
Peschiera is the only town on Lake Garda that is also a fortress. Not a castle on a hill, but an entire military citadel built on the water — a pentagon of ramparts, moats and navigable canals around the old town.
Its origins are Roman (ancient Arilica), but its present shape was given by the Republic of Venice in the 16th century, later perfected by the Austrians as the apex of the Quadrilatero (with Verona, Mantua and Legnago). Since 2017 its walls have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, together with the other Venetian defensive works.
The second distinguishing trait is functional: Peschiera is the lake's mobility hub. Its station on the Milan–Venice line means many international visitors set foot on Lake Garda for the first time right here, stepping off the train. It is also the logistical base for the big theme parks — Gardaland above all — which makes it, more than any other town, a family destination.
Where the lake narrows and becomes the Mincio, the canals run into the inhabited centre: boats moored beneath the houses, bridges, crenellated walls. It is often called, with some licence, the "little Venice" of Lake Garda.
Things to do in Peschiera del Garda
The old town, inside the walls, can be walked in half a day. But Peschiera also works as a base: theme parks, cycle paths and boat trips all start here.

Where to eat in Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera's cuisine is that of the Verona shore of Lake Garda, with one foot in the lake and one in the Mincio plain. Lake fish meets Veronese dishes, and within a few kilometres some of the lake's best-known wines are produced: Lugana, Bardolino and Custoza.
Practical tip: inside the walls and on the lakefront you pay for the location. The trattorias on the inner streets and in the San Benedetto hamlet offer better value. For tortellini di Valeggio, the original is in Valeggio sul Mincio (10 km).

Where to stay in Peschiera del Garda
Peschiera is famous for its large lakeside holiday villages and campsites — among the biggest in Europe — ideal for families heading to the parks. But inside the walls there are also family-run hotels and B&Bs. Prices are on average more accessible than in Sirmione.

One day in Peschiera del Garda
Designed for those arriving by train in the morning and leaving in the evening. Everything is walkable from the station, which is 5 minutes from the old town.
Arrival at the station and breakfast in the centre
From the station, through the fortress gate, you are straight into the old town. Coffee in one of the inner squares, away from the busier lakefront.
The Venetian walls and canals
A walk along the UNESCO ramparts and the Mincio canals. If it is Monday, the market animates the circuit of the walls.
Boat trip
A seasonal tour of the fortress moats and the Mincio — the best way to understand why Peschiera is a town of water.

Beach or cycling on the Mincio
Bergamini beach is a walk from the centre, or hire a bike for a stretch of the Peschiera–Mantua cycle path along the river.
