A town in the Trentino upper Garda, crowned by a medieval castle on a rocky spur. A world capital of climbing and an elegant former Habsburg health resort, with a Mediterranean climate, palm trees and gardens — the lake is just 5 km away.
Arco sits in the Sarca valley, in the Trentino upper Garda, about 5 km north of Lake Garda — between Riva del Garda and Torbole. It is not a lakeside town, but it is fully part of the Garda territory and its climate.
Its position is that of a gateway between lake and mountains: to the south, the Riva and Torbole lakefronts within minutes; to the north, the Sarca valley towards Trento. The A22 Brenner motorway is close (Rovereto Sud exit), making Arco easy to reach from Northern Europe.

Arco is the Garda exception: it lives not on lakefronts and beaches but on rock, gardens and history. It is a rare case where extreme sport and 19th-century refinement coexist in the same place.
Above the town watches the Castle of Arco, perched on a limestone spur and made famous by a watercolour by Albrecht Dürer in 1495 — one of the first "landscape" views in the history of European art.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries Arco was an elegant Habsburg health resort: Archduke Albrecht of Austria wintered here, drawn by the Mediterranean climate. The Arboretum, the avenues lined with palms and magnolias and an unusual Central-European atmosphere south of the Alps remain.
Today Arco is above all a world capital of climbing: the crags of the Sarca valley and competitions such as the Rock Master draw climbers from around the globe. It is one of the reasons Arco is searched online all year round, not just in summer.
Arco splits between its old town (on foot) and the outdoors of the Sarca valley. A destination that works all year, not just in beach season.
| Place | Practical notes |
|---|---|
| Castle of Arco | Medieval fortress on the spur, 14th-century frescoes and valley views. ~20 min walk up. Ticket. |
| Habsburg old town | Collegiate church, palaces, tree-lined avenues. Central-European feel, pedestrian. |
| Arboretum of Arco | Historic garden with Mediterranean and exotic species. A legacy of the health-resort era. Free entry. |
| Crags and climbing | Hundreds of routes in the Sarca valley for every level. Schools and mountain guides in town. |
| MTB and Sarca cycle path | A network of MTB trails and a flat cycle path along the river to Torbole and the lake. |
| Lake at Torbole / Riva | Beaches, sailing and windsurfing ~10 min away. Torbole is a top spot for wind. |
| Market | In the centre, mornings. Trentino produce, Garda olive oil, alpine cheeses. |
Arco's cuisine is Trentino with a Garda soul: mountain dishes, Trentino upper-Garda extra-virgin olive oil and local wines. A meeting of Alps and Mediterranean that you taste on the plate.
Practical tip: the osterias and refuges of the Sarca valley serve honest food at fair prices. In town, skip the most touristy spots in the centre and look for the trattorias frequented by climbers and residents.
